Computer Game Sub-Genres

A game is basically a structured form of entertainment, usually undertaken for fun or entertainment, and at times used as a teaching tool as well. Games are often different from work, which is usually undertaken for remuneration; work is normally carried out for a livelihood. However, the term ‘game’ can cover any activity that requires a person to use his mind in order to solve a problem, come up with a solution, manipulate another person or object, use his muscles or physical reactions to overcome obstacles or to achieve some goal. In other words, a game can be described as any structured form of human leisure.

There are innumerable genres of games, and almost every kind of game can be categorized into at least two sub-genres. The first sub-genre is what we call the arcade game. Arcade games are those that require some degree of skill and strategy in order to succeed. They can either be single player games (poker, chess, etc), or multiplayer games (jet skiing, tower defense, etc).

The second sub-genre is what we call the platform game. Platform games are games that require players to jump from one platform to another. Examples of platform games include jump master, snake jumpsuit, potato Mine, gravity blast, etc. The jumping involved is controlled by the keyboard or game controller.

Another sub-genre is the time-line based game. Time-line-based games are very linear in their storyline; the player has a beginning, a middle and an end point. He can travel back in time using any of his tools or weapons. Some examples of time-line based game are Castle Crasher, Downhill Jam, etc.

Then there is the simulation game. A game, simulates reality to the best of its ability and presents a challenge to the player. Examples of such games are Abalone and the classic Lemonade Tycoon. They offer a great deal of opportunity for the player to experience all sorts of real life situations and problems. These are very engaging games and a great way to relax after a hard day at work.

Last but not least is the simulation game. They fall somewhere between the arcade and platform genres. They offer some problem-solving opportunities as well as the opportunity to explore the environment and see everything with your eyes closed. Many people enjoy playing these types of games after a long and hectic day at work. They are relaxing and entertaining.
