The History of Sports

There is no exact date on when sports first began, but it is obvious that children have included physical activity in their play for as long as humans have been playing games. Images of hunters pursuing prey are depicted in prehistoric art, and there is abundant iconographic and literary evidence to suggest that the game of hunting was a means to an end for ancient civilizations. In ancient times, many cultures regarded hunting as a worthy end in itself, and their children continued the tradition of playing sports.

While there are a variety of definitions for sport, most sports are governed by a set of rules and customs. These guidelines ensure that competition is fair and that the winners can be consistently determined. A sporting event can be governed by physical events, and judges may score certain elements of a sporting performance. These measures may be subjective or objective. In colonial Virginia and Maryland, sports occupied much of the attention of the population. In England, hunting was reserved for landowners, but in America, game was abundant and everyone could participate. In colonial Virginia, sports were a popular form of entertainment. While hunting was a privilege of landowners in England, it was a common practice for all to take part in sports in America. In fact, there were no restrictions on the activities of the public, and people could even participate in sporting events despite their social status.
