Improving Well-Being Through Well-Being

Health is a condition where disease and infirmity are completely absent. Various definitions have been employed over the years for medical purposes. One of them is “the maintenance of the normal body weight and psychological health in an adult.” This definition has been employed since time immemorial and has been in use since people first learned to walk.

It’s easy to see why health promotion is so important. It improves your physical and mental well-being. It also decreases the risk of disease and death. People who have good health, particularly mental health, live longer lives. They are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, stress, alcohol abuse, and other mental disorders.

In the United States, the well-being is seen as being associated with three primary determinants: biological factors, social determinants, and other environmental factors. The Bironstoke Model, developed by James Rotton and Anthony Heyman, classifies mental disorders into three main categories. They are Bipolar Disorder, Major Depression, and Schizophrenia. These are further broken down into five additional categories: seasonal affective disorder, paranoid personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, and major functional ability impairment.

Well-being has also been determined by the frequency and severity of diseases. When we talk of diseases, it implies that there is something that is not ordinarily normal about a person’s health and behavior. For example, diabetes and heart disease are considering diseases. On the other hand, they are considered normal, when a person doesn’t have either of these. Therefore, the definition of healthy includes a person who has a regular and healthy rate of blood sugar regulation and has enough energy to engage in physical activity. Similarly, the definition of healthy as a non-disease is inclusive of the person having normal weight, having regular menstrual cycles, having moderate levels of depression, and avoiding risky behaviors such as smoking and drug use.

In order to maintain good health status, people need to be aware of the basics of healthy living. It involves paying attention to one’s diet and nutrition, obtaining the necessary amount of sleep, and avoiding exposure to environmental risks such as injury or illness. In addition to these basics, people need to make wise decisions regarding tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, as well as making strategic changes in their social environments. As a result, one has to adopt a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to achieving good health status. This will include nutrition, exercise, mental health, physical health, and environmental issues.

Public health is concerned with the overall health of a nation. It is made up of the fields of nutrition, public health, epidemiology, and medical research. All these fields work together to address the concerns of health. For instance, nutrition is concerned with the supply, absorption, metabolism, and use of nutrients in the human body. Public health is concerned with reducing health-threatening risks and improving the quality of life through prevention, control, and reduction of diseases and other disorders.
